The Ulans:

The Ulans (Austrian spelling) were one of the three traditional cavalry regiment type (Dragoons, Hussars, Ulans) of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The K.u.K. common army had 11 regiments, while K.K. Landwehr had another 6 . The Ulan regiments were usually recruited from Polish, Ruthene or Ukrainen population (in Galicia) but also from the German part of the Empire as well as from Croatia or Bohemia.

The Figure:

Our figure is based on a picture of K.u.K. Galizisches Ulanen-Regiment 'Erzherzog Carl' Nr.3. with the majority of Polish origin. Facing colour of collar and cuffs were madder red for all regiments, but the top cloth covering colour of czapka and the buttons had different colours regiment by regiment. Czapka Colours:

The czapka was black the eagle and decoration were brass with regimental number in the middle of the eagle crest. The spectacular horsehair was black with brass badge (FJI) , but the trumpeter had a dyed red version.
